FREMONT -- Jimmy G’s Pit Smoked Barbeque had humble beginnings before it found its home at 1321 W. State St.

Owner Jim Gippert, who can often be found helping customers with their trays or working in the kitchen, said in 2009 he had a benign tumor removed from his neck that caused some nerve damage and influenced his eating habits.

“Certain foods didn’t affect me as much because it was my own cooking,” he said. “It’s kind of a redemption because I don’t know if we would be here if I hadn’t experienced that pain in my life.”

A business began, with a mission to “show kindness and build community” in the city of Fremont.
